Top reasons why this $20Date is awesome (like, really really awesome)

20dolla-4353

  • Food Trucks (Oh! Burgers & That Food Truck were there when we were) vary daily. Order from them outside, pay inside the warm & cozy cafeteria-style Dinin’ Hall.
  • We bought from both trucks and split our lunches – both were DELICIOUS! I’m really becoming a huge fan of food trucks:)DSC_3767
  • The positive feel of true community is very present.
  • Positive “buzz” of local vendors, products, artists (& yummy smells of all the food/drink samples!)

  • DSC_3766{Thunderkiss Coffee inspired me to cold-brew coffee & Franklinton Gardens inspired me to cook dinner that night with fresh produce}
  • Live local music & performers
  • Cool, cool, cool warehouse space/atmosphere
  • I truly could go on & on but I’ll stop. Just go there. This Saturday 3/23. And then in two weeks:)

 DSC_3760

Total = Varies depending on what food truck(s) are there, but definitely under $20. We spent $15 & we were stuffed. Enough leftover to buy a local good, product or veggie!

Great Food. Great Space. Great Community. I couldn’t agree more. :)

Date #49: Grass Skirt Tiki Room + Main Library

Comments Off $20 Date, Afternoon, Dinner, Downtown, Friday, Happy Hour, Lunch, Night, Saturday, Thursday, Tuesday, Wednesday

This week’s cheap & creative date is…

Luau-esque Food + Books!

What: Grass Skirt Tiki Room {new, AWESOME bar/restaurant brought to you by The Columbus Food League!} + Columbus Metropolitan Library, Main Location
Where: Downtown Date – 105 N. Grant Avenue (GSTR) & 96 S. Grant Avenue (CML)
When: GSTR – {T-Th 11a-12a, F-Sa 11a-1p}; CML – {M-Th 9a-9p, F-Sa 9a-6p}
website - The Grass Skirt & Library

Top reasons why this $20Date is awesome:

  • When greeted at the door of this newly opened, tucked-away restaurant, you receive a lei (to keep!).
  • A unique, inviting atmosphere paired with deliciously inspired dishes & drinks makes you feel like you’re truly in a luau.
  • Everyday during Happy Hour, there is a $3 specialty drink. Yes please!
  • Many fun tiki-inspired drinks (for very decent prices).
  • Their small plates are DELICIOUS, easy to share and affordable!
  • I went with two lovely ladies (Ari & Kayla!), and we split the Mini Veggie Spring Rolls, Sweet Potato Wedges, and Thai Pineapple Fried Rice Bowl. And we were full!
  • Their entire menu is affordable & carries the Hawaiian theme throughout.
  • After Happy Hour, we headed down the street for what Ari deemed as the “nerd part of the date”
  • If you’ve never been the Main Library, go! It’s beautiful and if you love reading, you can get lost. Three levels, artwork throughout, AND during warmer days, there is a sweet topiary garden behind the building.
  • Rent a movie (for free!) and take it home–making this date last a little bit longer. {just remember to return it–no late fees;)}

Total = $14.50 (for all 3 small plates) + $9 (for 3 specialty drinks) + tax/tip = $30
*Disclaimer-since it was the three of us, here is a prediction of what the cost would be if Rob & I went: $2 Beer + $3 Specialty Drink + $5 Rice Bowl + $5 Menehunes (small sammies) + tax/tip = $20! Easily doable!

Thanks Kayla & Ari for going on a $20Date with me! You both rock!

Date #41: Knead + The North Market – Local Foods Week Date!

2 Comments $20 Date, Afternoon, Downtown, Happy Hour, Morning, Night, Shopping

I <3 local products, local produce, local events, the locals themselves & local restaurants – that’s why I’m excited to be a part of Local Matters’ Local Foods Week! My husband Rob & I, when researching for $20Dates, try to stick to what’s special & unique to Columbus which includes locally owned & operated businesses, restaurants & bars.

Supporting local food (fruits, veggies, meat, spices, etc) is also something I like to cheer about. Knowing farmers and gardeners & tasting firsthand the vast difference between an apple picked in their back yard versus an apple shipped from California makes me greatly appreciate local ingredients. So in honor of Local Foods Week, I wanted to find a locally owned & operated restaurant who prided themselves in sourcing local ingredients for their food! I immediately thought of…

Knead!

Where: 505 N. High Street, 43215
Hours: Lunch = Tuesday – Friday 11a-3p, Sat 10a-2p, Sun 10a-5p
Dinner = Tuesday – Thursday 5p-10p, Friday – Sat 5p-11p, Sun closed for dinner
Happy Hour: Tuesday – Friday 5p-7p, Sat – 10p-11p
KneadOnHigh.com

Recently Rob & I tried Knead, a delicious, awesome, LOCAL restaurant off High Street in the Downtown area. In support of Local Foods Week, I wanted to share our new found love in Knead with Francine, my best good friend, on a $20BestFriendDate!

Our server Shannon was so nice and very knowledgeable about the menu, from cocktails to desserts. Some really cool things about Knead:

  • Almost every ingredient in every menu item is made from locally sourced ingredients & the owners and chefs pride themselves in “food made from scratch.” And it is oh so yummy!
  • Spinning dessert case with homemade whoopie pies
  • Full bar, showcasing products many local breweries (Elevator, CBC) & distilleries (OYO, Watershed)
  • Many veggie/vegan/gluten free options
  • Large booths, open kitchen, open atmosphere
  • Very affordable kids menu
  • Extremely nice, enjoyable staff
  • Cool map of Ohio on the wall which shares where their ingredients come from – mushrooms, basil, milk, organic oats, whole wheat, Amish cheese, honey, maple syrup, ground beef, short rib, Bershire pork belly & shoulder, chicken, pickles, eggs, butter, goat cheese, greens and veggies. That’s just a small sample of all the ingredients they get from our lovely state Ohio!
  • Happy Hour = All Pizzas ½ off! $5 Cocktails, $4 Wells, $3 Merlot, $2 Hudy Delight beer, $1 Burger Beer <– Perfect time to do a $20Date here!

I tried the Knead A Burger, per Shannon’s suggestion, and it was DEE-LIC-IOUS! Worth every single bite & what makes it even better, Shannon was able to tell me where all the ingredients came from! Pickles (my most favorite thing ever) are directly from Don Hermann in Garretsville, Ohio! $12 + $3 fries with homemade fennel ketchup = $15.

Fran tried the Pep & Pep Pizza and the 10” pizzas are definitely built for sharing!  $12

Afterward, we walked around the corner to The North Market and walked around a bit. Enjoyed the smells & sounds that make The North Market feel cozy & exciting at the same time, tried a couple samples and planned our next BestFriendDate this weekend – breakfast & Artisan Sunday {every Sunday until October, 12-5p}! Farmers Festival is this Saturday as well. {Rob & I have made just The North Market into a $20Date by itself – lunch + live music + dessert on the weekend:)}

*Francine & I spent a total of $20 each and thoroughly enjoyed our time at Knead! {But remember, you can easily make this into a $20Date by splitting a Happy Hour pizza + two drinks OR splitting a burger & fries!}

Local food, local restaurants, local bars, local shops – they are all the heart of why Columbus is AWESOME. We <3 local—and you should too! :)
Check out Local Matters Event Page for a list of fun things to do next week during Local Foods Week.  Ooo, and take the Eat Local Challenge – we will be!

Happy Dating,

Jess {& Francine} & Rob

Date #35: Lexi’s on Third + Ohio Statehouse

Comments Off $20 Date, Afternoon, Downtown, Happy Hour, Lunch, Outdoor

This week’s cheap & creative $20Date is…

What: Yummy local restaurant + a tour of history of the capitol building
Where: 100 E. Broad Street — on the corner of E. Broad & 3rd (by the Chase Building)
When: Happy Hour @ Lexi’s = M – F 4-9p; Tours for the Statehouse = Guided tours- M – F on the hour from 10a – 3p & Sa – Su 12p – 3p. (about 45 mins) Self-Guided Tours are whenever they are open, (M-F 7a-6p, S-S 11a-5p)

Lexi’s On Third & Ohio Statehouse

Dan, the awesome owner of Lexi’s on Third, recently finalized the menu for a sweet happy hour, so we had to try it! (remember St. Patrick’s Day corned beef special?? Same place!) Rob & I met up after work and sat on the patio, with views of bustling downtown Cbus. Great service, awesome management & wonderful food (can we say Reuben Nachos?!). Lexi’s on Third is quickly becoming one of our most favorite happy hours with seriously one of the best menus I’ve seen.

Reuben Nachos--yummm

After we shared a couple drinks + appetizer, we walked across the street to the Ohio Statehouse. Beautiful & vast, I often am in awe when I’m driving downtown. So I went to their website and found out that they have FREE guided tours & FREE self-guided tours! We missed out on the time for the guided tour, so we headed to the gift shop and rented a self-guided tour “wand.” You receive a map of all the cool places around the Statehouse with a corresponding number to dial into the wand. We had such a neat time wandering around the Statehouse, amidst Senators and Representatives, learning interesting things about our nation’s capitol building. And did I mention it’s free?! :)

Not only was this $20Date one of our more favorite ones in awhile, we also had Jeff, a videographer for Fox28/Abc6 follow us around on our date! He was really awesome with his own personal knowledge of the Statehouse and even gave us a few ideas for future $20Dates! It was such a fun experience–we’ll keep you posted when that footage will air!

Total: $5 Lexi’s Punch + $2 Yuengling + $7 Reuben Nachos + $3 in the meter + tip + FREE tour of Statehouse = $20!

Other things to try our next time at Lexi’s: $3.50 Freedom Fries (with multiple different flavor toppings!), Broad Street Mama (specialty drink) & homemade spinach and artichoke dip!

Kisses:
*Quality, delicious food–you can tell that Dan & his staff take pride in their food, it shows!
*Fun, open air patio, with views of the bustling downtown streets
*HUGE happy hour menu with drink specials (all martinis & specialty drinks = $5, $1 off domestic beers)
*The Statehouse was so so so cool, and we only had time to see 1/3 of it!

Misses:
*Parking can be crazy during happy hour times–we recommend meters off of Gay Street or State Street. Be careful of the time constrictions on meters off Broad & 3rd!

Happy Dating,
